Tuesday, February 9th, at 10:30 a.m. 65 West Orange High School students will visit with more than 30 senior citizens at the Green Hill senior care facility, in an effort to bridge the generation gap and make new friendships that span the generations.
The 8 Minute Mingle is fashioned after a ‘speed dating’ model where students armed with a plethora of questions, personal, historic, political and experiential, meet, talk, and learn from their wizened counterparts.
“Our senior residents really enjoy spending time with young people from our community,” said Green Hill Inc, Executive Director Toni Lynn Davis. “It’s a wonderful experience for them to be able to pass along the wisdom gained from their own life experiences and events of the past, and at the same time making new young friends.”
The information learned by the students is taken back to the classroom where teachers apply the data and anecdotes to learning modules on various curriculums. New friendships are made between teenagers and seniors citizen that lead to greater understanding between the generations, a new perspective on student’s lives, current events, and is thought to help increased volunteerism by youth with senior citizen services.
This is the second year of the 8 Minute Mixer program.
