On a early summer day Veterans of the Military Order of the Purple Heart visited Green Hill inc, in West Orange, New Jersey to honor the veterans who reside there.

Flag gift bags filled with toiletries and personal letters from children were presented to Green Hill veterans as a salute to their service to our country. The Military Order of the Purple Heart visits veterans throughout the year as a way of recognizing military service all year round not just on Memorial Day.

“We remember our veterans and we thank them for serving our country”, said John Valentine and John Daiuto, decorated veterans that received the Purple Heart.

The Order of the Purple Heart was chartered by congress in 1958 and it’s composed of men and women who received the Purple Heart Metal for wounds suffered in combat. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action.

“It’s an honor to be remembered for our service”, said Martin Bloom, who was the recipient of the “Award of the Soldier’s Medal” in 1945. “It’s nice that they have come here today to visit with us vets.”
